Your doctor might recommend a HyFoSy (or hysterosalpingo-foam-sonography) to evaluate the patency of your fallopian tubes. It is similar to the HSG (or the hysterosalpingography) with the major differences being that a HyFoSy can be performed at the doctor’s office, it avoid exposure to contrast (useful for women with contrast or shellfish allergy), and is generally less painful than an HSG.

Timing is usually between cycle days 8 and 10. After your periods and before you ovulate.

Procedure:

  • It starts with a similar position as with a typical gynaecological exam.
  • The cervix is first prepped and then a catheter is passed through the cervix
  • A foamy solution is infused through the cervix then the uterus and if your tubes are patent, out through the tubes on both sides; all under ultrasonographic guidance.
  • There might be some cramps associated with the infusion of foamy solution

The good news is that you’ll know right away if your tubes are patent, partially blocked or bilaterally blocked. And there is a slight increase in your chances of pregnancy after this procedure.

To prepare for the HyFoSy,

  1. Take 600mg of ibuprofen 30-60 minutes before the procedure.
  2. Come with an extra sanitary pad as you may have water vaginal discharge in the 1-2 days following the procedure
  3. Light cramps are also normal in the first 2 days following the procedure and you may repeat ibuprofen 600mg three times daily as needed
  4. If any of your tubes were to be blocked, you’ll be prescribed 500mg azithromycin after the procedure

Please call your doctor if you have:

  1. Heavy vaginal bleeding
  2. Fevers
  3. Uncontrolled abdominal pain
